Residing in the Pacific Northwest ever since she was a child, Rachel Simpson’s life has always involved art. The community of Bellingham, the outdoors, the ocean, travel, diversity, and her family are big parts of her life and inspiration. She has a wealth of experience in many forms of fine arts, showing her work throughout WA State, and teaching art. She graduated from WWU/Woodring of College of Education in Dec. 2013 with her certificate in Fine Arts & Education K-12. Rachel has continued her love of the arts and education in many ways, including being an art teacher at Franklin Academy for K-8th grades, teaching art workshops for both adults and kids at the Museum of Northwest Art, Whatcom Community College, painting an all school mural at Blaine Elementary, a Teaching Artist & VP on the Board at Allied Arts of Whatcom County, teaches summer/winter art camps, and after school arts enrichment programs at local elementary schools via her own business: Rachel’s Whimsical Art.
The ocean, marine-life, dreams, stories, and nature are all a part of Rachel’s inspiration for drawing, painting, mixed-media, ceramics, and sculpture. The bioluminescent marine-life drawings & paintings are some of what you see on display. She’s captured the essence of the glowing fish underwater, which closely resembles them in their natural form in the deep ocean. It’s achieved by using ultra-violet light reactive paints and inks, onto black backgrounds and onto wood panels. The vivid colors are visible without use of the UV light, but they are much brighter when used. The other mixed-media art are made with a variety of materials such as acrylics, mediums, textures, crystals, semi-precious stones, shells, and found objects. She pays close attention to the detail of the sea-life, to try to share their beautiful mystery in all their forms under the depths of the ocean. Find similar pieces that she’s created Rachel’s Whimsical Arts pages on both Instagram/Facebook #RachelsWhimsicalArt , with Allied Arts of Whatcom County, at her downtown studio in Bellingham, WA , by email RachelSimpsonArt@gmail.com , and online rachelswhimsicalart.weebly.com
