What is Firelight Designs and Darlene all about? Being a Coppersmith has allowed me to work with a metal that I feel is warm and giving in forming, texturing, and patinating my pieces. Don’t get me wrong, I also work in silver and brass, but copper is my favorite metal, the one I go to first when designing jewelry.
My work is hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind, and meant to last a lifetime. I source my materials from the USA whenever possible. I enjoy interacting with my clients at shows, for commission pieces, or at my classes.
I began my small business, Firelight Desings, in 2000. My work has evolved and developed into what you see today, just as I have personally evolved in how I perceive nature and the world around me. Living in the San Juan Islands affords me access to nature in all of its forms which is an inspiration and is transformed in to my work.
My studio is located on the beautiful island of Guemes, in the San Juan islands of Washington state. It is at my studio that I create my art, and teach my classes. My studio can accommodate up to 14 students, and I prefer a more intimate setting of up to 8 students so I can interact with everyone and give individualized instruction.
A degree in Art History has shown me the evolution of art, form, and function across many applications; and studying scientific illustration brought me closer to nature. Not everyone knows I started as an oil painter, learning old masters’ techniques. Then came watercolors, mixed media, and ultimately jewelry design. I do still draw and paint too. In jewelry designs I attempt to bring color, movement, texture, form and other elements into a three dimensional creation. Currently I seem to focus on pendants and necklaces. It is an evolution so that will change!
Shows. Here you will find some of the shows I have been involved with more recenlty.
Where my work is located. Both my paintings and my jewelry have found homes in the USA as well as in Canada and Europe. My work can also be found in many shows throughout the Pacific Northwest.

When you visit my studio on Guemes, as a guest or as a student, there is jewelry, there are paintings, and lots of tools and equipment that I use every day, as well as beautiful views out of the windows. You can ask me lots of questions and get more of a sense of what my art is all about! Currently I teach jewelry making at beginner and intermediate levels at the Studio. Upcoming classes are posted on my website, Facebook, and on other online platforms too.
