L25, Ocean Sun, is the oldest member of the Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW) population at this time. Estimated to be in her 90’s, she is believed to be the mother of Tokitae, a SRKW who was taken from her home in the Salish Sea and moved to Sea World Miami in 1970. Tokitae has been kept in captivity ever since. The SRKW population feed almost exclusively on salmon, making a lack of prey the most serious of all challenges for this ecotype of Orca.
I took this photo in 2010 when Ocean Sun was estimated to be in her 80’s.
